Cheap Hotel Penang

A good and cheap hotel in Penang to recommend is the Hotel Mingood. You pay about $20 for a double room in this budget hotel which is well situated within walking distance of lots of Penang's sightseeing, restaurants and markets. Reason why it's a cheap hotel is because the rooms are old. Nevertheless it comes with airco and a TV that can receive BBC.

Penang's beaches are nice, not as exotic nor idyllic as other beaches in Malaysia. Main reason why you should go to Malaysia is because not only received Penang a world heritage status, it is especially a food paradise. Reason is because Penang has a rich multicultural history with Chinese, Malay, Indian, and European influences. And Penang won't be spoiled by the country's biggest political party which has no interest in making Penang the pearl of the orient.

Always check out the cheap hotel packages of the budget airlines traveling to Penang. We already mentioned that Malaysia's budget airline AirAsia gives attractive packages for a cheap hotel stay in Penang's Shangri La Rasa Sayang's beach resort:

Backpackers wholove to travel off the beaten track: be aware that there are cholera outbreaks in Terengganu and Kelantan and that traveling by road towards the Thai border can be impossible due to road closures due to the current floods.

However, if you are spending your holidays in beach resorts like the Coral Redang Island Resort, all should be fine... except for the enormous downfalls of rain this year. If you wonder why you managed to get a cheap holiday package for Terengganu or other resorts at the East coast in Malaysia, it is because it's raining season there.

However, if you love the slow paste of island life and you are keen to experience how the tropical rain can bring people together, or you just want to experience what it is like to take a shower during tropical rains, booking a cheap travel to Malaysia's east coast in Terengganu is an ideal value for money option at this time of the year. Do know that the sea can be rough and snorkeling or diving tours could be postponed or cancelled all together.

We just don't advice you to go off the beaten track, unless you can't be bothered with cholera nor closed roads in Terengganu, Malaysia.

Ketupat Sotong

Terengganu Ketupat Sotong: a must try when you are in Terengganu or surely when you venture far away from Kuala Lumpur in the states of Sabah and Sarawak. For that matter: do try all the food that looks yummies and you never saw before in Malaysia or elsewhere in the world!

One such thing to try in Terengganu is the wrapped rice in squid called "Ketupat Sotong". Originally, a ketupat is a type of rice dumpling wrapped in palm leaves. Yet the Terengganu ketupat is wrapped inside squid or sotong as it is called in the Malaysian Language.

A must try not because it will be your most delicious meal ever, there are much more delicious dishes in Malaysia for you to enjoy, but try this Terengganu Ketupat Sotong for the original idea of stuffing a squid with rice.

Coral Redang Island Resort

Enjoy lazy beach life at the Coral Redang Island Resort. Just remember that it's rainy season now, so you can get wet. Add to that global warming is adding more ice from the north and south pole into the atmosphere, and you know rain is becoming a major problem. Hence the huge amount of floods this year in Terengganu.

Other than that, getting to Redang is not easy. Which is good news for saying: you won't find that many tourists in Redang. The Shahbandar Jetty will take more than an our to reach the main port of Redang, where you need to switch to a smaller water taxi which will take you to Coral Redang Island Resort in about 20 minutes.

Note that there is no TV and no coffee maker in the beach chalets, so anything you need you have to find in the restaurant or call for the more than efficient room service.

Since the Coral Redang Island Resort is situated within Malaysia's premier marine park sanctuary, do sign up for some snorkeling or diving tours or just relax under the palms trees at the beach.

Tanjung Bungah Beach Hotel

Except for their private beach, there is nothing else positive that I can say about the Tanjung Bungah Beach Hotel.

Just came back from Penang to have a viewing of a new launched property with sea view. Since the building is only in its initial stage, I thought: let me book close by the viewing in the Tanjung Bungah Beach Hotel: at least experience what the see view is like... Well, I love the sea view and bought the property :-)

As much as I like the apartment I just bought, as much do I dislike the Tanjung Bungah Beach Hotel. I had to wake up very early to catch a flight to Penang and finally arriving there at midday, I was both very hungry and very tired. the last thing you need then is standing in front of the reception where the girl trying to assist her is so slow that her colleague meanwhile already checked in 4 more people. How bad can you get?

Very bad: food was not included and the food in the restaurant (fried noodles) was about 5 times more expensive than what I pay for in a better coffee shop, yet the taste was 5 times worse than what I eat in a coffee shop. Ok, maybe I was just in a grumpy mood aggravated by the slow check in at the reception. Other than that, the TV doesn't give you CNN and I don't know why the Internet gives this hotel a 3 start rating, as I can hardly find 2.

Again one (and for me only) positive point of the Tanjung Bungah Beach Hotel: the hotel has a private beach and you can book a room with a sea view.

Ubud Hanging Gardens

As close as you can get to heaven are the Ubud Hanging Gardens in Bali, Indonesia. If you can afford to buy an airplane ticket, then you save the same amount of money and have a 3 nights stay in the hanging gardens in Ubud: the staff will address you personally which is just an example of how you will be pampered for your money. Maybe you could say they are too interested in what you are planning on each of your days :-)

Now you don't have to stay 24/7 in your hotel, once you are in Ubud you should do what the locals do and taste their famous "Ubud babi guling" which translates to 'roasted suckling pig'. And for those that love to eat pork meat, Bali has it!

Ubud Babi Guling
Ubud babi guling: Bali's famous roasted suckling pig

First you need to know that you will end up with only tiny slices of the pig on your plate. Secondly it is eaten in markets and road stores, so it's a far cry away of the luxury you are indulging yourself in the Ubud Hanging Gardens.

To escape from the luxury and the infinity pool of the Ubud Hanging Gardens, do see the countryside with the Banyan Tree cycling tour. You will appreciate it even more when you schedule a spa after you have been walking into the village and cycling around.

spa village resort tembok

Go back to nature and 5 stars in the Spa Village Resort Tembok in Bali, Indonesia.

2 things I love about this resort:

  • the pool that seems to overflow in the sky

  • the organic food served in the restaurant.

I mean: if you indulge your body to the luxury of a spa but 1 hour later start stuffing your rejuvenated body with the same old unhealthy fast food and fuzzy drinks... I sure you get the picture.

That's why I loved to eat in their restaurant as they focus on fresh, local, sustainable organic ingredients. And when you see that the fishermen keep their boats at only 50 meters away from the Spa Village Resort Tembok, you know you are not eating frozen fish that you could eat in any other hotel anywhere else in the world. Having spent more than a week here, it's just wonderful to be able to taste a new and fresh menu each and every evening and to enjoy a free yoga session each and every morning.
