Monokini Swimwear

Monokini swimwear is one of the more revealing types of swimsuits. Looking at it from the back, it's easy to mistake it for a bikini. Seen from the front, however, its deviation from the usual bikini is readily apparent . It doesn't leave the midriff totally uncovered; instead, the swimsuit's top and bottom pieces are connected, usually along the midriff and leaving the sides of the torso bare. This is why it is also known as a cutout swimsuit.

But during the monokini's early days, only the wearer's bottom part was covered. When Austrian-American designer Rudi Gernreich launched the original monokini in the early 1960s, it caused quite a controversy since it left the breasts uncovered. It consisted of just a bikini bottom that covered the stomach and part of the upper thighs, and two attached thin straps that went around the neck.

Today, monokini swimwear generally covers the bust area, although there are still designs that remain true to Gernreich's vision and leave the chest bare. These are mostly seen in areas where topless bathing is permitted. Those who prefer not to go topless but still want to show off their figures in a revealing swimsuit have plenty of other design options to choose from.

Various monokini bathing suits are available from both top-notch fashion designers, which can cost hundreds of dollars, to more affordable versions from mass retailers like Wal-Mart. Both resources are popular among countless women.

As an example, there's TV actress AnnaLynne McCord, who has been photographed wearing designer monokinis from brands such as Juicy Couture and Calvin Klein. However, there's also a picture of her wearing a $13 monokini that she bought from Wal-Mart. Then there are also photographs of singer Rihanna in Hawaii clad in a revealing silver monokini (see top picture).

There are numerous monokini variations that a woman can choose from in order to draw attention to the best parts of her body. Some monokini bottoms are high cut, exposing a lot of thigh, while others are more modest. The rear part may be cut in the g-string style to bare the buttocks or be like the more traditional bikini to provide more coverage. Monokini swimwear tops are available in a variety of styles as well: from bandeau cuts to halter tops to deep-vee necklines that go down to almost the navel.

One Piece Swimsuits for Women

With all the varieties of bathing suits available out there, one piece swimsuits for women remain a firm favorite among many. The number of styles have increased and evolved since this type of swimsuit's emergence into popular culture almost one hundred years ago and today women can choose from among practically hundreds of cuts and designs, some of which have been featured in magazines such as Sports Illustrated.

The basic one-piece bathing suit design is also known as the maillot (from the French phrase maillot de bain, meaning bathing shirt) or tank suit. The most familiar design would be the one that covers the torso, has straps that go over the shoulders, and a scoop or square neckline. However, there are numerous variations to this basic design. Some swimsuits have halter-type straps, some have sleeves or no straps at all. Some have deeply plunging necklines or expose the abdomen; some provide full or extensive back coverage while others don't.

The bottom parts of one-piece bathing suits for women also come in various styles. Some designs are modest-looking, covering the hips or in the case of boy-cut suits, even go down to cover the tops of the thighs. French-cut swimsuits, on the other hand, are more revealing since the leg openings are cut high to show the hips.

Generally speaking, one piece swimsuits for women are thought to be more conservative than two-piece swimsuits or bikinis. This isn't always the case, however. Two styles, called the "Pretzel" and the "Slingshot" can show just as much skin -- or even more -- than a bikini does. These suits leave very little to the imagination since they expose much of the buttocks, breasts, hips and abdomen.

Since single-piece swimsuits are available in such a wide variety of cuts and patterns, it isn't surprising that many women of all ages, body types and sizes have at least one in their wardrobe, since the right one can flatter any physique. Plus size women, pregnant women, young girls, celebrities: they can all be seen looking sexy and comfortable in one piece swimsuits for women.

People baring large amounts of skin while on the beach or by the poolside is a common enough sight, but it isn't always the best idea. With skin cancer being the most common form of cancer in the United States, it's in one's best health interest to wear sun protective swimwear more often.¹

Rash guards, long sleeved swim shirts, and board shorts that protect from UV rays are available for men. Similarly, there is no shortage of options when it comes to sun protective swimwear for children and infants.

How can you tell if your swimsuit is providing sufficient UV protection? The best way would be to learn about the fabric's Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) rating. A number of countries have implemented standards for sun protective fabrics, and in the U.S. these standards were introduced in 2001. According to the American Melanoma Foundation, clothes that has UPF ratings of 40, 45, and 50+ offer excellent protection since they block up to 98 percent of UV rays.³

With the knowledge that overexposure to UV rays can have very harmful health effects, it makes perfect sense to protect yourself and those you love from them. Wearing sun protective swimwear, no matter what your age or gender, and whether you choose to play in the water or just lounge around on the beach or poolside, goes a long way toward achieving this goal.

Rawa Island

Rawa Island is a beautiful tropical island in Malaysia with really white beaches and deep blue water.

The island is just 16 km away from the coast of Mersing and is also a good starting point for boat trips to visit the surrounding islands because, well... except for the 2 hotels (one of which is for backpackers only) there isn't anything: no shops, no villages, no restaurants, no nothing.

Having said so, you can imagine what well to expect on Rawa island: peace and quietness, not too many tourist and the corals standing exposed in front of you when the tide is low.

Again Mersing is the place to embark on a speed boat that brings you to this tiny island. Depending on the weather, this can be 30 minutes of smooth sailing or 45 minutes to 1 hour of a hellish journey that leaves you soaked from head to toe. So if possible book your transfer in the morning when the sea tends to be more calm.

Once you set foot on the island, an unspoilt coral island with white sand beaches and swaying palms awaits you. Did I say white beach? Yes, this must be the most white beach in whole Malaysia. Since you will go there for peace and quietness, avoid the weekends and public holidays when the local Malaysians hop over for a stay. Daytrippers have to pay to enter the private island owned by some Malay prince, which adds to most tourists avoiding the island all together.

For food, you have the choice of the 2 restaurants of the 2 resorts. When the weather is really bad and there are no supplies from the mainland coming in, do enjoy the ultimate freshness of a local catch prepared for you.

Accommodation is done in basic yet comfortable chalets. Do not expect aircon in the backpackers resort - Le Club Rawa recently renamed Alang Rawa - though, in the other resort - Rawa Safaris Island Resort -, aircon is included and most welcome after soaking up the heath of the sun or just when you want to enjoy a cool night rest. Apart from airconditioning, Rawa Safaris chalets also come with hot water but without TV: however, the sunset you can admire from your beach villa is priceless. Expect to pay at least $130 US per person per night, full board.

Your typical Rawa day will comprise sunbathing, enjoying the tropical breeze, swimming, snorkeling, diving, relaxing in the hammocks and enjoying the sunset or simply feeding the coral fishes near the jetty or just straight on the beach. If you want some exercise, you can go canoeing or wind surfing: anything that is not motorized is available. Other than that you island hopping or fishing trips can be arranged.

Part of the protected marine park, the beautiful blue-green clear sea offers: coral gardens, colorful fish and large shells. Just remember: don't take anything with you and only leave your footprints behind. There is no dive master around, nor can you take diving lessons. However diving equipment can be rented from the shop of the Rawa Safaris Resort.

Apart from the water and beach activities, you can walk up the hill (15 minutes walk) to the lookout point and have a birds eye view of the island (beach in front, cliffs on the other side) and if you wake up early, to enjoy a beautiful sunrise.

You can also walk towards the end of the beach (left direction when facing the sea), climb over some rocks to enter a small cave with a spectacular arch.

Rawa is a gem of an island, a haven of peace that will heal you from your daily stress!

Terengganu

Terengganu State, on the east coast of Malaysia, is known for its golden beaches, clear skies and an emerald green sea with many exciting diving and snorkeling spots. Off the beaten track you will find lots of laid back typical Malaysian villages, ideal for low budget backpacker trips.

For the better resorts you can chose between the Primula Beach Resort, the Sutra Beach Resort and the extremely beautiful Tanjung Jara.

The capital Kuala Terengganu offers the Primula Beach Resort: quit busy and not the cleanest of all beaches.

A bit further to the north lies the Sutra Beach Resort: a very peaceful holiday village with a bit more than 100 accommodations and a secluded beach.

Top of the bill is the Tanjung Jara Spa and Resort - from the luxurious YTL hotels - with a beautiful garden and a river. Close by is the beach of Rantau Abang: 1 of the 6 beaches where the rare leatherback turtles lay their eggs between May and September.

If you love to swim in sweet water, then pay a visit to the Sekayu Recreational Park, 56 km away from Kuala Terengganu. The pristine jungle offers many waterfalls and pools. if you want to witness what the Malaysian women wear when bathing in the water, you will be surprised not to see any bathing suits: people just go in with normal shorts and t-shirts, not to mention the Muslim women still wearing their tudung or veil. And expect lots of locals during the national holidays...

For a more relaxing sweet water experience, go fishing at the artificial Kenyir Lake made by the Kenyir Dam.

Terengganu is about a hours boat trip away from the popular diving, beach and resort destinations of Pulau Rendang, Pulau Lang Tengah and the Perhentian Islands.

Gem Island

Daydreaming in your private paradise at the only resort and spa on Gem Island or Pulau Gemia, a kayak trip away from Kapas island on the east coast of Malaysia.

Gem Island is still undiscovered and therefore a lot quieter than the other islands on the east coast like the Perhentian Island and Tioman. It lies just 15 minutes (5 km) offshore the jetty of Marang and you can reach it just by paddling in a canoe from Kapas Island.

The fun of this island lies in the fact that you can have the private beach all to yourself. This is because the island is overlooked when tourists pass them by traveling to the more touristy Islands of Redang, Perhentian and between these 2: Lang Tengah. Pulau Gemia is the ideal hideout for the local Malaysian during the weekend. Needless to say that when you visit the island during working weekdays, you could end up being the only visitor.

Things to do on the island are relaxing on the beach, reading a book in the swinging rattan chair of your balcony, walking around the 8 acres of rocky island, discovering white sandy private beach coves, having a swim, snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, birdwatching on the jetty, jigging squid ('candat sotong'), helping out in the turtle conservation sanctuary or trying to spot a turtle.

You can also take a kayak to visit neighboring island Kapas. It's very safe to kayak in the 800m stretch between the 2 islands and especially in the morning you could to spot black-tip sharks around you. Kapas is a typical backpackers island, so a bit more busy than Pulau Gemia. Both islands are breeding grounds for turtles and part of the work of the staff of the Gem Island Resort (the only resort on the island) is seeking out turtle nests. The eggs will be transferred from the secluded beaches to the turtle sanctuary of the Gem Island Resort where they will be incubated and released in a special hatchling pool before returning them back to the sea.

The island is privately owned and like we mentioned only has 1 resort. Unfortunately for the scenery, the about 50 villa's are typical Malaysian concrete villa's built on stilts, kind of spoiling the exotic, pristine island beach scenery. The advantage of this is that you get luxury compared to the backpackers accommodations in nearby Kapas: nothing compares to the outdoor jacuzzi:

At the north side of the beach you can relax and enjoy a rejuvenating spa:

To reach Gem Island, you normally take a domestic flight with MAS (Malaysian Airlines) or AirAsia to Kuala Terengganu. There a taxi can be arranged to take you on an about 1 hour drive to the jetty of Marang.

There you can choose to embark daily on 1 of the 4 boats that depart from 9am onwards, every 2 hours. Do note that on Friday, the afternoon boats are cancelled due to Friday Muslim prayers.

At the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim event held in Miami Beach, Florida, in July 2011, various designers showcased their pants beachwear offerings that included pantsuits, slouchy pants, and leggings³. Some of the designers that exhibited pants as a swim cover up were Spain’s Dolores Font Cortes, Australia’s Lisa Burke, and New York’s Norma Kamali.

Huda features on the cover of Lilac; an Arab-Israeli magazine revealing a skimpy black sequined bikini under an open white shirt having her thumbs pressing down at the sides of her bikini bottom.

The 22 year old model is the first Christian Arab Israeli model to feature a cover in a bikini in Israel. In the west: nothing to frown about, as she is competing for the 2011 Miss Earth competition in Thailand in December this year and campaigning as such.

Huda Naccache is an aspiring model and geography and archaeology student from Haifa city has been taking bikini shots before, but only now gets the much wanted attention featuring on a cover.

In the Arab world however it's not that often, not to mention hardly ever to see such a 'daring' shot on the cover of a magazine. Even more daring is the almost topless shot of Huda Naccache wearing a one piece bathing suit that leaves hardly anything to the imagination of the naked eye...

Other shots show her wearing a white and red string 2piece bikini. Her father is fully behind her pictures and wishes his daughter all the best in the Miss Earth competition. Her mother thinks completely the opposite and would have never allowed her daughter to do a bikini shoot.

Of course some more traditional Arabs aren't so open to the shoot either. Others call it the Arab bikini revolution hinting to all the other uprisings that are happening in the Arab world.

Perhentian Islands

On the north side of the peninsular Malaysia are the 2 beautiful Perhentian Islands: Perhentian Besar (big) and Perhentian Kecil (small).

How to get to the Perhentian Islands.

Normally you would first travel to Kota Bharu or Kuala Terengganu. From there take a bus or nook a taxi to Kuala Besut: a little fishing village where boats will take you to the islands that are about 20 km off the coast.

Kuala Besut is an hour's drive from Kota Bharu and a 2 hours drive from Kuala Terengganu. At its small harbor, you can buy tickets for the boat, but you can also purchase your tickets at the airports of Kota Bharu and Kuala Terengganu (although the prices at the airport are higher than in Kuala Besut). Just do note that when weather conditions are bad, the boats will not sail out, chances of bad weather in the tropics increase after midday, so to be on the safe side, try to book a morning trip.

Accommodation

Both islands offer quite a few accommodations from resorts with airconditioning to very basic lodges without air conditioning. There is no freshwater Perhentian, so do you shower in filtered salt water. There aren't any internationally known hotels, so if your in for pampering, you better go to nearby Redang Island.

There isn't much to say really about accommodation and food: Perhentian is first and foremost a place to enjoy diving and snorkeling. Perhentian Kecil is mostly frequented by backpackers and is crowded, with their best resort being Tuna Bay. The better resorts however are on Perhentian Besar, like the Perhentian Island Resort. However, do know that the food in the Perhentian Island Resort is way overpriced: it's your typical Malaysian cuisine that you can find anywhere on the island for much cheaper prices. Do bring a torchlight though, as walking from the Resort to the rest of the island crosses quite a scary, dark, staircase in decline.

The monsoon season is between October and March: most of the resorts will close because of the really bad weather.

Diving and Snorkeling

Perhentian is a true diving and snorkeling paradise. Just like Pulau Redang, it is situated in the Terengganu Marine Park. Unlike Redang, Perhentian is more flat and therefore more suitable for snorkeling, as the waters around the island are quite shallow and various resorts in Perhentian have their own house reef. The fishes on these house reefs will come towards you, hoping to be fed. It is advised not to feed them as they aren't bread eaters.

Do know that the corals are deteriorating fast, so the best way to find secluded snorkeling spots is to rent a boat for a day or a canoe and peddle around the island by yourself.

A nice spot for snorkeling that is reachable by boat-taxi is the so called Shark Point. The secret is that there are no sharks, but the water is quite deep: it's not possible to step on corals and the amount of fishes is just amazing.

The beaches of Perhentian Kecil are very small and don't be surprised to find an empty plastic bottle here and there: a far cry from what you would expect from a Marine Park. However the island is by far more lively than its bigger brother.

On the right side of the Perhentian Island Resort, you have very good snorkeling, less crowd and you could spot grazing turtles.

For about RM1000 (330 USD) you can get your diving PADI on the Perhentian Islands, but you do need to stay at least 5 days. Highly recommended though!

The Andaman Langkawi

Datai Bay, on the north-west coast of Langkawi, is an exclusive stretch of beach for guests of the high-end resorts: The Datai Langkawi Resort and The Andaman.

Datai Bay offers you a retreat for pampering in an oasis of tranquility. And at The Andaman Spa you can enjoy massages and therapies with an exotic view of the clear, cool waters around the Langkawi and the beautiful islands that rise in the distance.

For the more adventurous, you need to know that there is hardly anything else to do than to relax, stroll to the Datai Langkawi Resort or rest on the beach and take it all in. Other than that, be prepared to crack your brain over the following choices: beach or pool? snorkel or dive? smoothie or cocktail? ... :-) Nearby after a jungle walk you could visit a crocodile farm or put some holes in one of the 10 best Golf courses in Malaysia: the Datai Bay Golf Course. For more activities, you need to venture out at least 7 km to find the nearest attraction, being the Langkawi Cable Car.

But if you want to be high up in a more peaceful surrounding away from all the tourists, just book a spa in the Andaman Langkawi Spa. A buggy from the Andaman resort will drive you high up to the 5 private suites that offer you an amazing view over Datai Bay and the Andaman Sea. Try the seaweed baths, the volcanic mud or an eye mask with roses.

Datai Bay is about 30 km or half an hour drive north of the Langkawi International Airport. It is not advisable to hire a bike and drive to the Datai or Andaman resorts, as the roads become quite steep and are more suited for seasoned professional bicyclist than for people that want to relax and enjoy on the beach.

Redang Island

If you love diving, snorkeling and doing nothing: Redang island is only flight away from paradise.

Pulau Redang is an archipelago in the South China Sea, on the east side of the Peninsula Malaysia . Redang is a protected marine area, or as they say here in Malaysia: a marine park. It's situated about 45 km from the coast of the state of Kuala Terengganu. Being an archipelago, it is surrounded by many small islands, surrounded by crystal clear water offering several great snorkel and diving opportunities. Redang is a bit touristy offering some quite luxurious resorts and spa's.

Redang Accommodation

Some very good resorts on Redang are the Sari Pacifica Resort and the Berjaya Redang Resort in Teluk Dalam. The latter is actually my favorite resort and spa:

When and how to get to Redang?

The best time to visit Redang is between April and October. The northwest monsoons blow from November to March, most resorts (except the Berjaya Redang Resort) will be closed during this period.

Due to the monsoon, the underwater world is far less clear to enjoy but if you want peace and quietness and a true relaxing holiday where you can come to your senses and rhythm of life dictated by the sun, winds and rains, the monsoon season is your best bet.

From Kuala Lumpur you used to be able to take the plane to either Kuala Terengganu, or Kota Bharu (for cheap tickets fly Air Asia or Firefly). Then take a drive to the fishing village of Merang where a boat brings you to any of the islands off coast.

However all this cumbersome traveling has recently been made extremely easy thanks to a direct flight straight to Redang island.

Snorkeling and diving in Redang

Redang is well known as an excellent diving area. Each resort obviously offers diving packages which you could hop and shop around for.

I learned how to dive in the Berjaya Redang Resort and received my PADI there.

Also snorkeling is out and about around Redang. Maybe you wont see any turtles, but it is not all to difficult handfeeding the fishes.

You can easily rent the equipment from your resort (some even give it complimentary, just try your friendliest smile and discover how far it will bring you on the Malaysian islands...).

Some resorts have their own housereef, other resorts will take you out in a boat, do ask in advance when booking, as nothing beats coming out in snorkel gear out of your villa and walking towards a coral abundant sea.

Hiking in Redang's rain forest

Redang is also an ideal place to go hiking as the rain forest is just nearby. Simply ask a map with the walking paths in your hotel, take lots of water, a hat or cap, lots of sunlotion if you aren't covered inside the rain forest, and mosquito spray and you are ready to go.

If you only feel like strolling around on the beaches, make sure you are fully protected against the hot sun, otherwise you will understand hands on why in each resort shop the green Banana Boat bottles with Aloe Vera creams are sold: they are ideal to soothe your skin after a sunburn. But better wear appropriated beachwear and use sun protective lotion with the highest SPF (try to find spf 80).

Redang or Perhentian?

Compared to nearby diving paradise Perhentian offers more luxury resorts and spas, where Perhentian is more for backpackers and cheap travel. Personally I prefer Perhentian for snorkeling and Redang for getting pampered in the high end resorts.

Tioman Island

On the southeast side of the Peninsula Malaysia is an archipelago of 64 islands out of which Tioman Island is the largest (about 350sq-km). Other famous islands in this region: Pulau Seri Bulat, Pulau Sembilang, Pulau Tulai, Chebeh, Pulau Labas and Pulau Renggis. Tioman is situated about 60 km from the coast in the state of Pahang and was used once to shoot the reality show Survivor.

How to get to Tioman

There are 3 ways to reach Tioman Island: by land (and sea), sea and air. Berjaya Air (from the famous and luxurious Berjaya Hotel chain) brings you in about 60 minutes from Subang Airport in Kuala Lumpur to Tioman for a bit more than 200Rm one way.

A bus or taxi ride will take you in about 4 to 6 hours from Kuala Lumpur to the fishing village of Mersing. You can also hire a rental car and rive yourself to Mersing. However there is no drop-off point there for your car, so you will be paying a rental car to be just parked during your stay on the island: quite a waste of money.

Boats on the Mersing jetty will take you to your final destination. The boatride from Mersing to Tioman will take at least one hour: be prepared to wait until boats are full before they depart or make sure you arrange a private pick up from your hotel.

Mersing Fishing Village

The Mersing jetty looks quite crappy and around the jetty are quite a number of your typical souvenirs shops. Most likely you wont venture into the village itself that does have more than 20.000 inhabitants.

Things to do in Tioman

Although the interior of the island is jungle area, the edge of the island is densely populated and houses all the resorts. The islands of Tioman and nearby Perhentian and Redang are known as a diving and snorkeling paradise, although the spots they will bring you are sometimes a bit too touristy. The better beaches are: Genting Beach, Tekek Beach and Salang Beach.

The easiest way to travel from one place to the other in Tioman is jumping on the ferry or renting a more expensive water taxi. Hiking is also a possibility as well as renting a jeep.

When to visit Tioman

The best time to visit the island is between March and October. The rest of the year you could get hit by the monsoons. Since the island is inhabited by locals, you can get there the whole year round, but the ferry will only sail
when the weather conditions permit.

As usual, avoid local Malaysian holidays, school holidays and the national holidays in neighboring country Singapore as well.

Athletic shape

You just don't have much curves anywhere. You could add some shape wearing a bikini with bold stripes and ruffles to add volume to your top and bottom. Bandeau and slider tops are also a great choice for the top. For the bottom try boy-shorts or low-rise hipster bottoms.

You are tall

Your legs and or your torso is long. A monokini is your ideal fashion statement. Accentuate the areas you want to show off to take break your length.

You are petite

Your legs and or torso are rather short. String bikinis are your ideal choice as you can secure them to a snug fit. Make your legs look longer with high-cut bottoms, anything but a short or a skirt that will make your legs even look shorter. Look for designs that make a person's eye go up and down like a V shaped neckline or a vertical print. If you are not sure which body type you have, look for bathing suits in the shape you think you have. Then chose the other body shape you are confused about and follow the tips mentioned there.

In order to choose from the widest swimwear selections available, consumers are encouraged to do their shopping just before summer opens, although there are still plenty of choices even in the summer months of June and July.

When it comes to 2011 spring and summer trends concerning swimming costumes for ladies, it seems like there is something for everyone's taste. Swimsuits of various styles and designs are being showcased everywhere, from beaches to fashion shows to trade exhibitions.

Looking at what celebrities are wearing to the beach is not only a fun pastime for many, it can also be a way to get a feel for what's hot in swimsuits. But judging from pictures¹, it seems there isn't any one single style or design that dominates the beach scene. Actresses Megan Fox, Demi Moore and Courteney Cox, for instance, were photographed wearing the classic black bikini; supermodel Gisele Bundchen was seen sporting an animal-print two-piece, and film stars like Kate Hudson and Cameron Diaz took to the sand and the sea in single-hued but brightly-colored bikinis. Marc by Marc Jacobs showcased a 1950s-inspired belted bathing suit with a floral pattern while DKNY launched one-shouldered swimwear in bold shades of blue and grey. High-waisted bikinis reminiscent of the 1930s and 1940s, on the other hand, were given a place in the spotlight by designers such as Elie Tahari and Michael Kors.

A plethora of bathing suits was exhibited at the Swimshow event of the Swimwear Association of Florida, which has held from July 16-19, 2011.³ The show enjoys a reputation for being the largest of its kind on the planet and it wasn't a surprise to see many familiar swimsuit brands there, including Miraclesuit, Playboy Swim, and Reebok. Designs and cuts come in a variety of styles that are suitable for both skinny and full-figured women. Bikini bottoms tend to be cut lower in the leg while having a high waist that can sometimes cover up the belly button. Not all women have perfect bodies; quite a few have problem areas such as an overly large bust, a tummy that's probably a bit too flabby or hips that are a tad too wide. These can make them feel too self-conscious to wear their swimsuit come summertime. Fortunately, there are various choices in slimming swimwear that minimize the appearance of problem areas while maximizing the best of one's assets.

It has been long-standing advice from fashion experts that wearing a bathing suit that has one solid block of dark colour can make someone look skinnier. I am staying at the Sari Pacifica Resort and Spa, all inclusive, which is a small boutique resort and spa with wifi. Nothing much to do in between snorkeling waiting for a relaxing massage on the beach it seems. There is also a jungle trek which I will sign up for maybe tomorrow, maybe as the one I am interested in will show the beautiful sunrise, yet it starts of course way early in the morning... Further on it's a good idea to book an all inclusive package, as there aren't any other real restaurants to be found on this uninhibited island.

You can reach Pulau Lang Tengah after a 60 minute boat-ride from Merang. Or you can take a boat from the nearby islands Redang and Perhentian that are much more commercialised for tourism, meaning that lots of corals has been stepped upon. For more peace and quietness nearby, also Pulau Kapas and Pulau Gemia are recommended.

The idea of a bikini body diet is to enjoy healthy and delicious food in a way that your body will look at is outmost best once you are on the beach or near the pool.

What can a Buddhist monk teach you about a bikini body diet?

Always start with a huge breakfast! Just think about those Buddhist monks: they only eat once a day in the morning.

Of course you do need to eat a decent meal to achieve this and you need to make the time for it as well. Think English breakfast: the egg and the beans are there for the proteins, lots of complex carbs and for sure there is fat in those sausages. Yet compared to fast food French fries and God knows what goes in those hamburgers, a good old butchers sausage is way better: stay away from the prefabricated sausages though!.

Go for fibers: what more delicious than a pancake for breakfast right? Well, pancakes are ideal to incorporate any high fiber flour like out flour. Serve with fresh berries, yoghurt and honey: healthy and yummies.

Make it healthy; drink freshly squeezed fruit juices, yoghurt, sweet fruit or honey in stead of normal sugar... well, think buffet breakfast in a resort: a lot of variety and you have all the time in the world to eat it. Add to that your typical resort yoga session that you can incorporate after breakfast at home as well. take a good shower and you are ready to beat the day filled with energy.

Cravings...

Of course you aren't a Buddhist monk (monks don't wear bikinis...), and you will start having cravings during the day.

Here is where you make the difference between a snack from the vending machine or a healthy 200 to 300 calories mini meal: 4 to 6 times a day.

Doesn't that sound as fun: you are on a diet and you can have 1 huge breakfast and 6 mini meals. Again make them high in fiber: bananas, dried fruits, appels, berries and nuts. It's about eating food that is delicious, food that is varied and food that has all it takes to get you through the day. A fastfood meal is not only fast served, it's also fast transferred in fat without giving you enough energy to get by.

Salads without the mayonnaise dressing are ideal mini lunches as well: you can eat a bowl and still you aren't stuffing yourself as you would with an equally big bowl of pasta.

You need to find a dressing that you like though:

personally I love a pinch of curry powder heated in a little bit of oil, then added to some yoghurt with salt and mustard,

equally delicious is a half yoghurt half ketchup dressing,

a boiled egg with some yoghurt, grated cheese, some grilled chicken...

Possibilities to replace mayonnaise are endless. Some people love vinaigrettes, again, there are lots of delicious choices out there, you just have to buy and try. What you spend on extra food that's not your taste, you will earn back when you don't have to enlist yourself in an expensive diet or hire a nutritionist. And it doesn't take too long until you understand what new choices your taste buds like.

And if so far no mayonnaise replacement worked for you, then get a ripe avocado, mash it with some salt, a pinch of cumin, some finely cut onion, if you like it hot; a little fresh chili, some lime or lemon juice and a little ripe tomato: or just whack everything in your blender. Try that as a dressing... you won't be buying mayonnaise any time soon when you are serious in reaching your bikini body.

Finish your day with a light dinner: anything grilled with again loads of vegetables and lots of fruits. My evening favorites are fruit smoothies: lots of health, fiber, taste and nutritious. Do use lots of grapes, so you don't need any extra sugar. Ideal during dinner and you can carry them with you when you plunge yourself in the sofa...

What to do when you feel hungry?

Of course everybody will sooner or later feel hungry. Sooner when:

you are using up more energy than your body is giving you.

you only had sweet sugar to feed your body.

A quick fix is sugar but this time not from a coke, nor a cafe latte. Eat sweet fruits. Or try frozen fruits (ever tried to use a frozen grape as a sweet, try it!). Or try my favorite: grapes and some other fruits in a blender, some ice cubes and a smoothie is ready in no time.

Favorite fast fruits are grapes, berries, kiwi, banana, mango and a must have: strawberries. On top of that, a smoothie keeps you hydrated, so no need for fizzy drinks that only add sugar and no fibers. And if you are in need of 100 plus because you do a lot of sport, try half water, half fresh squeezed orange and a pinch of seasalt or rocksalt.

What about having a sweet tooth?

2 solutions: sweet fruits or start with nuts and end with a chocolate of the very best quality (without too much unknown added nonsense that will only add to your weight).

Nothing beats dark melted chocolate with butter, an egg and honey. Let it cool, make small rolls and freeze them in...

Yes, it's not what you expect in a diet, but just imagine, if you have a sweet tooth, there is no reason to deprive yourself for the rest of your life. It's just that there are healthy sweets, reasonable healthy sweets and outright unhealthy sweets.

The above mentioned homemade delights have a very short shelflife (hence you freeze them in) and won't clot up your artery system like the cheap chocolate bars you take out of the vending machine (that sit in there for ages, hence they will sit in your body as long as they can as well).

How about late afternoon hunger?

What do you do in the late afternoon but dinner is still not around and you are oh so hungry?

Organic peanutbutter on a whole grain toast, whole grain cereal in yoghurt with some fruit or fruit with low fat cottage cheese...

Again: it's about using your imagination and reach for something delicious yet healthy with some natural sugar and lots of fiber or proteins.

Nothing prevents you to add natural sweeteners like Stevia which has no side effects, has been used in Japan for more than 30 years and in South America for over centuries.

Yet with the right fruit at hand (grapes), you don't even need sweeteners. A sweet apple has lots of pectin fibers that keep your stomach from absorbing the sugars too quickly and so will curb your appetite, especially the sweet tooth.

What do I eat when I travel?

Go to the information boot in the airport and ask where the smoothiebar is. Don't fret about the price: it's a cup full of health, and you 'save' when buying the biggest portion.

It beats paying way too much for an overpriced Coke and fastfood meal. If no smoothie bar, around look for fruit, salad or yogurt, and if worse comes to worse: eat popcorn.

But I'm dying for French Fries

Focus: you do want the bikini body right? So what about stealing a few fries from your partner and live with it?

Well, after I squeezed with my bare hands the oil out of the fries I bought at Mc Donalds, you do need to know that you can make your "KFC-like" wedges with very little oil as such:

3 large, unpeeled (Idaho russets) baking potatoes lengthwise into wedges,

toss in a bowl with 2 tablespoons peanutoil and

bake on a cookie sheet for 20 minutes at very hot (225 C - 450F).

Season with salt and eat your heart out.

One extra advantage: once you get used to your wedges made from fresh potatoes, you wonder why you could ever have fallen in love for those way too thin cut fast food fries. Not to mention the amount of salt they add to it so you will crave for a fizzy drink in no time.

How to get a hot bikini body

Again do read the workouts in our previous how to get a bikini body post and introduce the above
diet in your life.

In the end it's all about taking and making time for yourself and what you eat.

Give yourself the time for a good breakfast,

make time to shop around for fruits and new tastes.

Make time to prepare your own food and especially fast and healthy smoothies.

The key word is make time - quite the opposite than the keyword in fastfood.

Once you make time for yourself, you wont plunge into the sofa tired of having overindulged in way too many hamburgers with French fries.

How to get a bikini body

Start following these easy tips at home that promise you how to lose the holiday weight and how to get a bikini body just before June. We will stress on a workout in this post and talk about a bikini body diet in our next post.

First and foremost you need to get out of your couch. It's easier said than done, but once you get a routine of not sitting down, it will become easier to keep away from the couch. It's like a train: once you are in motion, you will easily keep in motion.

What do you do when you are not in the couch? If possible join a gym or a dancing class. Swimming is ideal and makes perfect sense since you want to wear your bikini near the beach or the pool. Meanwhile, one piece bathing suits can accentuate your better parts and hide what you will be working on the next few months.

If you don't want to spend the money nor enjoy any type of sport, then make sure to walk, walk and walk. Whatever you do, make sure your bum is not resting.

Once you start enjoying walking, walk faster or alternate some running with some walking. Try to start of with 20 minute sessions if you are a couch potato, but make sure that at most after a month, you have a 30 minutes exercise a day at least.

After one month: increase the intensity of what you are doing: run faster, bike faster, swim faster and alternate with your normal speed. Your body will become stronger and you will notice you will be able to do intenser exercises for longer periods.

Apart from making your body stronger and crave for more exercise, you need to sculpt your muscles with weights at home or machines in a gym. If possible, you and find a yoga video with exercises that focus on your bum, legs, quads (thigh muscles) and calves (back portion of lower legs).

Squatting exercises are done for bum and legs. Raising your heels as high as possible will strengthen your calves and raising your legs when sitting on a chair will strengthen your quads (if you do have to sit in a couch, this is an ideal way to take advantage of it: strengthen your quads!).

After you get a good routine of leg exercises, the next month add in arm and abs exercises. Again you can sit down but in stead of being lazy in the sofa, go sit on a chair, take some weights and start working your biceps doing seated curls(stretch arm downwards, bend arm upwards) and shoulder presses (lift the weights as high as possible and retreat them back to shoulder-height). Nothing better to get your abs in shape doing any of the crunches you know about.

Every new day, add a few more counts to each routine. Do know that after before each workout you need to warm up your body and afterwards, you need to stretch your body. Yoga exercises are ideal and don't worry if you can't stretch as far as the people in the video: the idea is to stretch as far as you can and with time, you will be able to outstretch the professionals. If not, you at least will have a bikini body to die for when you start exercising now.

Almost made up my mind to travel to Phi Phi Island, and I read about yet another tsunami warning. This time 7.7 earthquake hit the Andaman sea around the Nicobar Islands. Immediately a tsunami alert was triggered but unlike the devastating 2004 tsunami that hit Phuket and Banda Aceh, seems that this time neighbouring countries are safe.

Meanwhile the thermometer in my parents house in Malaysia is showing 31 degrees Celsius: according to my father it's now 4 degrees Celsius warmer than when he bought the thermometer 10 years ago in 2000. That means in every 3 years, it becomes 1 degree warmer? How scary is that?

I was about to book my holiday in the Indonesian Tasik Ria Resort, when I heard of yet another earthquake around Sumatra's Aceh province.

Quite a strong earthquake - 7.2 on the Richter scale - with a tsunami warning in place but the good news today is that it was false alarm.

My friend just returned last week end from the Tasik Ria Dive Resort, which seems to be an ideal place for diving in Sulawesi's Bunaken National Marine Park. Diving sites are a plenty and even beginners can join in the fun as well.

Snorkeling over the house reef seems to be quite ok and every evening you can relax at the Sunset Jetty Bar enjoying a marvelous sunset.

The Tasik Ria Resort is on the main land, which means you can stay some extra days without diving but doing excursions inland. You can buy fresh fish at the market and ask to cook it at the resort.

The spa is quite cozy with individual rooms and the management is British, which gives this resort just an extra oomph compared to the normally more slow and relaxed island resorts.

Enjoy a cool breeze and the smell of the sea one hour drive away from Kuala Lumpur Malaysia in the Riverview Restaurant.

The view is so stunning as if you were having dinner on a boat. Almost true, as the restaurant is build above the river and you can enjoy the riverboats sailing by.

Add this to your off the beaten track Kuala Lumpur tourism attractions when you want to eat fresh seafood (not frozen) from the early morning catch.

Although for Malaysian standards this restaurant is no more than a "coffee shop", do note that it is fully packed on weekends. And since Friday's the roads in Malaysia are also busy due to the Muslims taking half a day off, your best bet is to drive there from Monday till Thursday.

It seems to be a Halal restaurant as I don't recall any pork, not that I was looking for that in the first place: there is a lot of fish and see food on the menu:

Ships over 50 meter are not allowed to enter protected areas on the Reef under the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975. So why does a 189 meter vessel ignores these rules?

And why is the fine only $70.000 for each of the 3 crew members when they were destroying an ecosystem that is as important for the sea as fresh air is for you and me?

I remember many years ago during my last Great Barrier Reef vacation diving in Chicken Reef: I especially remember the humongous clams, some are almost as big as me. But it's not about 1 clam...

It's about huge coral trees that you can't see when sailing or snorkeling over the Great Barrier Reef. But just imagine what happens when a to big illegal vessel hits this coral tree? Exactly: it will be completely destroyed, taking with it all the diversity of marine life that was surrounding it.

It's like cutting the rain forest: in the last 10 years the temperature in my apartment in Malaysia has gone up by 4 degrees... It's not about one clam, it's not about 1 tree... but there is only 1 earth and it's changing for the worst in less than 10 years. The poor condition of the Malaysian coral reefs are really heartbreaking: lots of them just look like a gray coral graveyard.

Can fines of $70.000 really protect future scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef? The only way to protect our planet and enjoy its most beautiful reefs, beaches and other travel destinations is by changing our lifestyle to be more sustainable and less invasive.

Why can you get the death penalty for killing members of your community, but only pay $70.000 for killing members of the Great Barrier Reef?

Great Keppel Island Australia

Imagine this could be the last time you see this kind of sea turtles passing by the coral reef around the Great Keppel Island of Australia?

Great Keppel Island is just a water taxi away from surrounding beaches and National Park Islands. And it's exactly there that a Chinese vessel hit the Great Barrier Reef in the beginning of the month. As for today, the vessel has been refloated leaving an obvious grounding scar on the reef.

More damage ahead caused by the Chinese vessel as oil washed up on the beautiful beach of the North West Island. This island is a breeding ground of many (funny looking) birds and sea turtles. Needless to say if oil is found on the beach, more oil is floating above the reef damaging it even further.

Some might argue: luckily the Chinese vessel was carrying coal and not oil... The sad news however is that every snorkler and diver knows: you cannot come to close with your boat to the reef to prevent its destruction. The area where the Chinese vessel hit the coral reef was strictly forbidden for sea vessels, so this disaster is again due to people taking a short cut to feed their greed.

If people only think about short term gain, then we advice you to visit Australian's Gold Coast as soon as possible. Although the water is colder than in Malaysian or Maldivian diving waters and the reef is a bit off coast: I just found that snorkeling with and touching the sea turtle is an unforgettable and priceless experience.

Although I am a bit jealous that I am not naturally gifted with a D+ bust (a C would do as well :-) ), my friend cannot but admit that her skin is nowhere near looking as healthy as mine.

Eco friendly bathing suits

Most of you that hear about eco friendly bathing suits think about those Hawaiian or Polynesian girls wearing coconuts as kind of bikini top. However you can make perfectly sexy, beautiful and comfortable swimwear out of recycled plastic bottles:

Kenyir Dam

Isn't it amazing how in Malaysia this ugly Kenyir dam on one side can create one gorgeous lake on the other side:

The only way to sleep more close to the lake than what the Lake Kenyir Resort en Spa is taking a boat ride in the Kenyir Houseboat. The latter reminds you again why you love to spend your time in a private environment of boutique resorts and spa's.

On the other hand it all makes you thinking: how this Kenyir dam has affected the whole area here, how men in general are affecting the whole planet and why it is getting more and more important to start thinking about eco tourism and sustainable eco friendly resort and spa vacations. You don't litter when you take a massage and it's equally or even more relaxing than let's say taking a ride on a Jet Ski, minus the noise pollution, air pollution and carbon footprint.

Although having had a huge impact on nature and creating the wonderful Kenyir lake, the Kenyir dam does produce "clean" energy in its hydroelectric power station.

Anyway's, that's on the other side of the dam, at this side near the lake it's all peace and quietness! And today no need to wash all my towels, let's help to keep the little amount of clean water on this planet for the earth's fauna and flora.

Kenyir Houseboat

The lake Kenyir houseboat is your ideal home stay vacation destination if you love budget accommodation, basic luxury, water and fishing.

I went along for the experience with a group of Japanese tourists who didn't speak that well English and could use an interpreter. Anyway's, this Kenyir lake houseboat - or "floating device" to be more precise - biggest luxury is a real toilet on board. Cooking is done on board as well and the advantage of this boat is that it can take you far deep on the lake for a relaxing fishing trip. Not that I managed to catch anything, as trying to chit chat with more than 10 people at the same time as fishing isn't a smart option.

The other fun part is the smaller boat dangling behind the Kenyir house boat that you could take to get around places on Lake Kenyir where the slow boathouse can't reach.

All in all something different, ideal when you come in a group of friends, hire the entire boat and don't bother about any luxury.

Lake Kenyir Resort en Spa

My daily massage at the Lake Kenyir Resort and Spa (Ulik Mayang Spa) only costs RM70 or about $20. It's great to rejuvenate yourself in a place in Malaysia where temperatures are cool and you are surrounded by lots of water and nature.

Do book your chalet at the Lake Kenyir resort and spa with a view towards the lake! That's the best way to enjoy anything relaxing, or typing this post like I do.

I will have to go to the resort's lobby or restaurant to get connected to the Internet though, it would just be a little extra effort for the resort to get us an Internet connection in the Chalets. It's the small things that count I would say.

Lovely infinity pool at the Lake Kenyir Resort: make sure to bring your bikini and chill out in the bar after a swim.Sun tan lotion can be bought in the shop of the resort.

Choice of food is plentiful, yet the taste could be better when it comes to local food. Quite some variety of western food as well, which I will never understand; why you want to eat western food when you are in Malaysia: the melting pot of Asian cuisine?

Good service though and you just need to call and a golf cart will pick you up from your Chalet to where you want to go on the premises. Peak season for this resort is June, July and August. And since it is easy accessible, lots of local Malaysians spend their weekend here. So for a relaxing Resort and Spa holiday at Lake Kenyir, come during the week (just avoid monsoon season: November and December).

Soak Waterfall Lake Kenyir

The closest waterfall to the Lake Kenyir Resort is the Soak Waterfall. You can get yourself a driver and go there or you can combine it with a visit to the Herb Island, which is a good deal, as still it's only a 2 hour trip.

Herb Island is about 20 boat minutes away from Lake Kenyir Resort and when you hear how much different herbs are growing on the island, you know how utterly sad it is for mankind to replace all that with one crop of palm trees.

Another 10 boat minutes further lies the quite flat Soak waterfall.

What bathing suit to wear in Malaysia

Since you are in the tropics, exposing your skin only a few minutes in the sun can already give you a sun burn. Don't get optimistic, as you can get sunburned as well in the shadow and especially when bathing in one of the little pools around the Soak waterfalls.

We advice always to wear a cover up swimsuit, not only to protect you from the sun, but also from the glaring and staring eyes of village or the Muslim population in Malaysia.

Get inspired what the locals do and wear and you will not notice any local wearing a tiny bikini. Sarongs however are the cloth of choice to cover your body, your legs or to have something to sit on. And you will look quite exotic as well when you know how to fold a sarong the Malaysian way. Ask at the Spa in your resort to help you out, normally you will get a sarong with each Spa treatment.

Do bring your strongest sun tan: Lake Kenyir feels a bit cooler than hot Kuala Lumpur, but the sun is still as powerful everywhere you go in Malaysia.

Sungai Ketiar Elephant Sanctuary

And I thought you could only enjoy elephants when traveling to Thailand. Wrong! Malaysia has its own Sungai Ketiar Elephant Sanctuary open for visitors, far away on one side Lake Kenyir. Its easy to reach when you take the road that connects Lake Kenyir to the lovely Malaysian Cameron highlands.

The Sungai Ketiar elephant sanctuary is near to Mount Kachang in the little village of Sungai Ketiar.

One one end it's lovely to be able to see elephants in Malaysia. However, the word sanctuary reminds us that we are destroying the elephants habitat.

A country like Malaysia with so much tropical rainforest and a thriving tourist industry is missing the opportunity to introduce eco-tourism for all its rainforest, nature reserves and diving and snorkeling coral reefs.

However at the rate Malaysia is destroying rain forest to replace with palm oil and destroying the old colonial and Chinese houses with ugly concrete buildings, you start wondering why anyone will to travel to Malaysia in the not so near future.
